Tour Itinerary
  • Day 1: Siem Reap - Banteay Chhmar

Pick up from your hotel at 07.30am and head north to the province of Banteay Meanchey to explore the ancient temple of Banteay Chhmar (Fortress of the Cat or Narrow Fortress), a large temple that is rarely visited by tourists due to its remoteness, making a refreshing change from the crowds at Angkor Wat. A low key community tourism project has recently been established in the village to help these poor people supplement their income. On the way, you will stop at the village of Puok to visit the Artisans d'Angkor Silk Farm. Artisans d'Angkor creates employment opportunities for young Cambodians in their home villages by teaching traditional Khmer handicraft techniques such as stone and wood carving, lacquering and gilding and silk weaving.

Continue to Banteay Chhmar, where upon arrival the local community welcomes you with a traditionally-prepared Khmer lunch. Afterwards you will be introduced to your host family and visit their home where you will spend the night. After freshening up, a community guide leads you to Banteay Chhmar temple. Clambering over piles of stones and between large shady trees, you will discover the remains of fallen towers and walls. A local Khmer dinner will be served in the grounds of the temple by torch light - a unique experience! Enjoying dinner together with the local community is the perfect opportunity to discuss village life in Cambodia.

  • Day 2: Village life and Silk Weaving

Awake to delightful views of rural Cambodia and rice paddies stretching off into the distance. If you wish you can return to the temple and bask in the solitude of a lovely temple sunrise. After breakfast there is the opportunity to learn more about the typical village life as you experience an ox-cart ride, visit the rice fields, stroll around the grounds of the village pagoda and visit a local organisation that is helping to revive the silk weaving industry. Depending on the time of year you may also wish to assist your host family with their farm activities.

Later, pay a visit to the Pol Pot Baray and another wonderful and remote ancient temple. Enjoy a picnic on a wooden platform at the baray, prepared by the community project and possibly take a nap in a hammock. This is a peaceful temple and having it to yourself as the sun sets across the baray is an extremely memorable moment. On the way back, you can visit cassava farms if time permits. When you get back to the homestay, enjoy the end of the day with your family and have dinner prepared by the villagers, followed by a rice-flattening show and tasting.
