This 4-day tour combines a mixture of exercise, nature and relaxation in the remote village of Chi Pat, located in the Cardamom Mountains. Discover the Burial Jar mountain bike trail, enjoy a relaxing sunrise cruise while spotting birdlife and wildlife along secluded rivers, and spend time swimming in the cool waters.

Cambodia's Cardamom Mountains are one of the last places in South East Asia with large expanses of intact lowland rainforest, where contiguous forest connects mountaintops to the ocean, pristine rivers cascade to the sea, and wildlife is still in relative abundance.

Asia Adventures, in partnership with Wildlife Alliance, offers a series of multi-day treks and mountain bike tours into the unspoiled, forested Cardamom Mountains. You can find various natural and cultural sites in the forest such as waterfalls, ancient burial jars, bat caves, and wildlife animals like elephants, hornbills or flying squirrels. These multi-day tours lead you deep into the forest and include sleeping under the stars.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Phnom Penh to Chi Phat
Start early as you have to drive 190 kilometers (118 miles) to the riverside community of Andoung Teuk. Board the Chi Pat Community boat for a 2 hour upstream journey along the Preak Piphot River. Cruise through mangrove forests, witness typical river edge villages and homes, as well as be on the lookout for birds and mammals coming to the water's edge to drink. Upon arrival in the small, remote community of Chi Phat you will be welcomed at the Community Ecotourism Office and then check-in to your guesthouse (basic facilities inc. mosquito net). Afterwards you are free to wander around the delightful village of Chi Phat, gaining a real insight into rural Cambodian life, and meeting very friendly and curious locals. In the evening you are treated to a delicious 'Welcome Dinner' at the Community Ecotourism Office where you discuss the activities for the following days.

Meals included: D
Distance cycled: n.a.

Day 2: Burial Jar Trail Mountain Biking
After an early breakfast you meet your cycle guide and the mountain bike gets fitted. Once you have stocked up with water, you head north through a village. Cycle along single tracks and pass many banana plants before coming to Steung Chhay Chrey, your first river crossing. Spin along old logging trails which are reclaimed by the surrounded vegetation. Stop-off at Chruos Chhay Tekveth, a wide, curved waterfall, a perfect spot for a break. You continue along the trail passing through a mix of open meadow, bamboo thickets, lowland rainforest, and being treated to fine views over the surrounding forested hills. Close to the Burial Jar site the terrain becomes more rocky and steep and you will leave the bikes for the final short climb to a rock outcrop where you will discover the mystical ancient burial jars, and small wooden coffins. This rock outcrop looks out over the forested valley below and is a delightful spot to enjoy your picnic lunch and relax for a while. Afterwards, follow the same trail back to Chi Phat and cycle to the 'hidden' waterfall of O'Spot which you can walk behind and explore the 'bat cave'. This waterfall is perfect for taking a refreshing shower and jumping into the plunge pool! Just before reaching the village you once again cross the wide Steung Chhay Chrey River, a great opportunity for a late afternoon swim if you wish. Depending on how much energy you have left after returning to the village you may wish to cycle a few more kilometers to the top of Phnom Tra Ngoarl or 'Bald Mountain', a perfect sunset location with 360 degree views of the surrounding Cardamom mountains. After freshening up a tasty dinner will be served at the Community Ecotourism Office. The rest of the evening is free at leisure to wander around the village and experience rural community night life.

Meals included: B, L, D
Distance cycled: 45km (28 miles)
Level of difficulty: Beginner

Day 3: Sunrise cruise, bird- & wildlife spotting
Waking up early whilst it is still dark you board you motorboat and cruise along the cool waters with the early morning mists rising from them. As the sun rises and you are entertained with the skies changing colors, you can enjoy your packed breakfast. Soon you turn off the Preak Piphot River and sail up the secluded and winding Pruit River. After an hour the motorboat cuts its engines and you transfer to a traditional row boat and continue upstream. Now being engine-less you can really appreciate the stillness of your surroundings and hear the birds calling from the thick forests lining the river. This is the ideal opportunity to see the area's birdlife as well as watching out for other wildlife such as monkeys and flying squirrels. Eventually the rowboats arrive at a small clearing where you can disembark for a while to stretch your legs. On return your row boat stops in a delightfully shady spot where you can spend some time swimming in the refreshing waters before heading back to Chi Phat village. In the afternoon you are free at leisure to further explore the village, or maybe hire a bicycle to relax beside the nearby river rapids. In the evening you enjoy another tasty dinner at the Community Ecotourism Office.

Day 4: Chi Phat to Phnom Penh
You may wish to rise early this morning and walk down to the river to catch another magical sunrise and the village slowly waking up, the smoke from breakfast fires rising up into the still air, roosters crowing, and half awake children rubbing their eyes. After breakfast bid farewell to Chi Pat as you board the boat for your downstream trip back to Andoung Teuk. On arrival at Andoung Teuk your driver will be waiting to transfer you back to Phnom Penh where you will be dropped off at the location of your choice. On the journey back to Phnom Penh you will be able to reflect on the wonderful and unique trekking experiences you have enjoyed in the Cardamom Mountains, and taking away very fond memories.
