Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Cyclo Tour of Phnom Penh
Upon arrival at Phnom Penh International Airport you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel. Drop off your luggage and meet your cyclo driver for a fun tour in the city's traditional mode of transport. Your first stop will be the National Museum, home to a comprehensive collection of Khmer artifacts. Continue to the nearby Royal Palace on the banks of the Mekong River. Explore the neighboring Silver Pagoda, named for its floor, which it is claimed is made up of over 4,000 silver tiles! Your cyclo driver will then take you to a local restaurant for lunch, after which you will be pedaled to the impressive, ochre-colored art-deco Central Market, an iconic Phnom Penh landmark.Wander around the stalls and bargain for souvenirs. When you are haggled out your cyclo driver will take you to the historic French Quarter and Wat Phnom, the inconspicuous hill after which the city is named. Return on your cyclo to your hotel, where you are free to spend the rest of the evening at leisure.

Day 2: Phnom Penh's Dark Past
This morning you will learn about the dark side of Cambodia and explore its more recent harrowing history. Start at the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum, located in the infamous Khmer Rouge prison and torture center. Hear about the brutality of the Khmer Rouge regime, before driving to the Killing Fields, where Toul Sleng prisoners were forcibly marched to be executed. Return to Phnom Penh and visit the Russian Market, where some good cafés provide a perfect spot for lunch. The Russian Market is an excellent place for picking up Khmer antique reproductions, colorful silks, or incredibly cheap clothes. Afterwards, you will return to the hotel, where you will have time to freshen up before visiting a local restaurant for dinner.

Day 3: Siem Reap ~ The Small Circuit & Angkor Thom
This morning you will fly to Siem Reap to explore the Small Circuit of Angkor. Tour highlights include the huge pyramid of Takeo, the jungle-clad Ta Prohm, made famous by the Hollywood blockbuster "Tomb Raider," Sras Srang, known as the king's bathing pond, Banteay Kdei, and the elegant brick temple of Prasat Kravan. After lunch, explore the impressive royal city of Angkor Thom, including the Bayon temple, famed for its gigantic carved faces. You will also see the pyramid of Baphuon, Phimeanakas, and the royal viewing stand, known as the Terrace of the Elephants, and the Terrace of the Leper King. If there is time, your guide will take you to a beautiful spot that is perfect for watching a mesmerizing Angkor Wat sunset. The evening is free at your leisure.

Day 4: Banteay Srei & the Grand Circuit
Head north to the captivating temple of Banteay Srei, or "Fortress of the Women." Soak up the beautiful Cambodian countryside as you pass through typical villages en route. On arrival at Banteay Srei, explore the elaborately decorated temple, embellished with floral motifs and scenes from the Ramayana carved from pink sandstone. Then return to town for lunch. Continue your Angkor encounter with a visit to the spectacular temples of the Grand Circuit, beginning with Preah Khanor "Sacred Sword," one of the largest Angkor temples. Continue to Neak Pean, surrounded by fountains and ponds. Next is Ta Som and its famous strangler fig tree. Finally, arrive at Pre Rup, a pleasant spot to experience another Angkor sunset. This evening you will enjoy dinner and a fascinating Apsara dance show at a local restaurant.

Day 5: Angkor Wat, Floating Villages & Local Crafts
Today, take an optional trip to watch the sun rise from behind Angkor Wat's 5 carved towers. Then it is time to explore the world's largest religious building at Angkor Wat. Return to town for lunch, and head south to Tonle Sap Lake. On the way, you will call in at Artisans d'Angkor, a boutique workshop where you can observe young Cambodians learning traditional Khmer handicraft techniques, such as stone and wood carving, and lacquering and gilding. As you get closer to the lake, you will see the large hill of Phnom Krom looming closer. A walk up the hill provides superb views of Angkor temples. Upon arrival at the largest lake in Southeast Asia, board a boat and cruise past the traditional floating villages of Chong Khneas. Watch the residents going about their daily life, and marvel at entire villages made out of bamboo, complete with homes, gas stations, schools, hair dressers and karaoke bars that float on the lake. Head out into the vast expanse of the lake to experience the setting sun silently disappearing into the lake. You will then be transferred to Siem Reap/Angkor International Airport for your onward flight, leaving Cambodia with many fascinating memories.
