Multi-day Trekking Tours
Phnom Penh
Ratanakiri
Tour brief

This 10-day trekking expedition takes you through the biodiverse Virachey National Park in northeastern Cambodia, an area known as one of Asia’s last great wildernesses. You’ll trek with expert rangers and indigenous Kavet guides, who will teach you jungle survival skills. The journey includes camping by a waterfall and on a mountain’s edge. Highlights of the tour are a night safari to spot nocturnal wildlife and reaching the summit of Jak Yus Mountain, which offers a panoramic view stretching across Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. The adventure concludes with a bamboo raft ride down a river before returning to Banlung.

Itinerary
Virachey Trekking 10 Days / 9 Nights

Day 1Phnom Penh to Banlung

Begin your adventure with a full-day drive (7–8 hrs) from Phnom Penh to Banlung, the capital of Ratanakiri. The road takes you deep into Cambodia’s northeast, where landscapes shift from flat plains to rolling forested hills. Upon arrival, check in and relax before the trekking journey begins.

Meals included: L, D
Overnight in Banlung

Day 2Departure and Tribal Village Visit

The day begins in Banlung with an 8:30 AM departure. You’ll travel about an hour to Veun Sai District, then take a boat or ferry to a remote Kavet tribal village. After a traditional lunch and an introduction to your tribal ranger, you’ll embark on a 5-hour jungle trek. The trek involves a river crossing where your belongings will be placed in waterproof bags and floated across while you swim. The destination is a waterfall campsite where you will set up hammocks and sleep under the stars. In the evening, you will have dinner cooked by firelight and have the option to join a night safari to spot nocturnal wildlife.

Trek ~ 5 hours
Meals included: B, L, D
Overnight in a jungle

Day 3Trekking into the Old-Growth Jungle

Wake to the jungle’s natural symphony—gibbons, monkeys, and birds calling through the canopy. Trek 5–6 hours deeper into untouched old-growth forest, where giant hardwood trees tower overhead and dense vegetation must be cleared by machete.

Along the way, your guide shows how to find drinking water in vines, recognize edible fruits, and avoid poisonous plants. Wildlife sightings are possible—hornbills, macaques, or even wild boar.
By evening, set camp in a remote clearing and enjoy the solitude of the wilderness.

Day 4Heart of the Jungle & Night Trek

Continue deeper into one of Virachey’s most isolated areas, trekking for about 5 hours off faint trails into pristine forest. The sense of remoteness grows stronger as you enter untouched wilderness.

At night, after dinner, embark on a special 2-hour trek with headlamps to discover the jungle after dark. Look for glowing eyes of slow lorises, civets, reptiles, or hear the eerie calls of jungle owls. The sounds of insects and unseen creatures create an unforgettable nighttime atmosphere.

Day 5Trek to Jak Yus Sacred Mountain

This is one of the most challenging days, a 6–7-hour ascent toward Jak Yus Mountain, the highest mountain in Virachey. Trails climb through rolling hills and dense vegetation, with chances—though rare of spotting wild elephants in the distance.

By late afternoon, arrive at a campsite near the mountain’s edge, offering sweeping views over the jungle canopy. Camp here under open skies, with dinner and rest after the demanding trek.

Trek ~ 6-7 hours

Day 6Sunrise Wildlife Spotting & Mountain Summit

Wake before dawn to hear the gibbons’ haunting morning calls echo across the forest. After breakfast, make the final push to Jak Yus summit, the highest point in the park. From here, take in stunning panoramic views stretching across Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.

In the afternoon, descend toward a riverside campsite. Cool off in the clear waters and enjoy your last night deep in the jungle with the sound of the river beside you.

Day 8Bamboo Raft Building & Indigenous Homestay

Spend the morning crafting bamboo rafts with your ranger before floating downriver, surrounded by pristine forest. The rafting offers a peaceful change of pace after days of trekking.

Day 7Waterfalls & Remote Jungle Camp

Today’s trek (5–6 hrs) leads through dense forest to a hidden waterfall oasis. Your ranger guides you along the rugged path, sharing jungle knowledge along the way.

Set camp beside the falls, swim in the natural pools, and unwind in this secluded paradise. At night, the sound of falling water becomes the perfect backdrop to your wilderness camp.

Day 9River Rafting & Return to Banlung
