We depart in the morning for Oudong, located about 24 miles (40 km) north of Phnom Penh. Listen as your guide narrates the history of this former capital of the Khmer Empire (1618-1866), situated atop two parallel ridges that offer spectacular views. On arrival, head to the summit of Oudong (also called Phnom Oudong) and look out over the surrounding countryside. Then take a leisurely stroll through ancient structures, such as temples and stupas. Accessing the ancient site, which sits atop a hill, may be challenging for those who are unsteady on their feet, with a flight of 509 uneven stone steps the only way to access Phnom Oudong’s peak.
Next, take part in a traditional Khmer ceremony performed by Buddhist monks who sprinkle water and flowers and offer a personal blessing during 5 to 10 minutes of chanting. The ritual is believed to cleanse bad spirits from the past and bring good fortune for the coming year. You will receive a small string to tie around your wrist as a customary symbol of this memorable experience. Afterward, you’re served a local Khmer food before traveling back to Phnom Penh.
