Tour Itinerary

  • Day 1: Phnom Penh, Ancient Temples & Kampot

This morning you leave Phnom Penh and head south. After about 35 kilometers (22 miles) you will turn off the main road and visit Tonle Bati where you can explore the small yet picturesque Angkorian temple of Ta Prohm. On the banks of the nearby river are a line of bamboo shacks with hammocks, a great place to relax and have a refreshing drink. Further on, you can see the large hill of Phnom Chisor, when you arrive and have climbed up the 500+ steps you will be rewarded with nicely preserved 11th century temple ruins, as well as a fabulous panorama of the surrounding rice fields. Continue south following the charming drive to Kampot. Kampot has an undeniable charm; it is a sleepy place with a tranquil ambience and friendly locals, many French colonial and Chinese buildings and a wonderful riverfront with a small collection of cafes. After checking-in to your hotel, you will take a short drive through traditional Cham villages to the salt flats and learn more about the salt making processes. Back in Kampot you will be taken to a riverside restaurant where you will enjoy a freshly prepared seafood dinner.

  • Day 2: Explore Bokor Mountain & enjoy a relaxing river cruise

Today you visit Bokor National Park where you will drive up the winding 35 kilometers (22 miles) road through lush jungle scenery to the cooler summit hill station. After 25 kilometers (16 miles) there is an opportunity to take a break and stretch your legs as your reach the deserted Black Palace, one of the Kings former mountain top residences, which has stunning views out over the sea. From here the road flattens out for the final few kilometers and you begin to pass more abandoned villas before the main hilltop clearing, with its UFO-esque water tower, is finally visible. The Bokor Hill Station was originally developed as a playground for the colonial and Khmer elite in the early 20th century, it's cooler climate and lush scenery provided a welcome relief from the lowland heat. Afterwards you will stop at the nearby Popokvil waterfall and enjoy a refreshing swim. On the way back to Kampot you will visit a durian plantation and the river rapids Tuk Chou. Catch a boat for a relaxing and delightful sunset cruise back to Kampot, where you are free at leisure for the rest of the evening.

    Meals included: B, L
  • Day 3: Visit pepper plantation & Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island)

Bid farewell to Kampot as you pass through some delightful scenery of rice paddies, sugar palm trees, traditional wooden houses, and kart limestone outcrops on the way to the cave of Phnom Chhnork. Inside the cave you will discover the remains of a 7th century brick temple. After this you will visit the caves of Phnom Sla'ang, if you are feeling adventurous you can scramble through this cave until you magically appear into the sunlight on the top of the hill, being rewarded with some of the most beautiful views in Cambodia, with the traditional countryside stretching off into the Gulf of Thailand and its many islands (you also can follow the track up outside of the hill). Next stop is a local pepper plantation, a great opportunity to buy some fiery and delicious spices. On arrival in Kep you will head to the jetty to catch your boat for the short 20 minute journey to the lovely and secluded Koh Tonsay or Rabbit Island. The main beach is lined with coconut palms and this is where you will find your bamboo beach hut. This is a back-to-basics experience as there is no electricity and no running water. However, the beautiful sunset, incredibly starry night, and falling asleep to the sound of waves breaking, will make your stay unforgettable.

The more adventurous may wish to search out the hilltop for an American anti aircraft gun bunker, a relic of the Vietnam War. In the late morning you will return to the mainland and check-in to your hotel. Then you are free at leisure to explore Kep which was a popular seaside resort of Cambodia's elite in the 1940s-60s.
