Prey Veng is a quite sleepy Cambodian province and is located on the National Highway No. 1, which links Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. It is a small but heavily populated agricultural region. The name of the province means ‘tall forest’, unfortunately most of the lush forests were chopped down during the past 50 years. The area features two of the biggest rivers of the country, the Tonle Bassac and the mighty Mekong.
Prey Veng is situated in Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sancturary on the east banks of the Mekong River and borders on Vietnam in the South. The economy of the province consists of agricultural farming, fishery, rice and fruit cropping as well as some garment factories producing for international markets. Especially the rural households depend on agriculture and its related sub-sectors. Additionally, the tourism committee is trained in identification of birds such as the White Winged Wood Ducks or the Giant Ibis.
There are not many travelers visiting Prey Veng but it is a great escape from the usual routes. The town itself hosts a few decaying co lonial buildings and there is a huge lake on the west edge of the town, which evaporates from March till August and local farmers cultivate their rice on the fertile ground. One of the favorite tourist attractions is the ‘Fish Growing Center’ which educates visitors about different types of fishes. Visit Kampong Sne Damp, a remarkable wildlife preserve located 16 kilometers (10 miles) from the provincial town. The nature and wildlife preserve ‘Viel Brang (Veal Brang) In the City’ offers great adventure and hiking possibilities and you will be able to observe diverse species of wildlife and plants.
